Lilith

It is written:

Isaiah 34:14-The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the jackals, And the wild goat shall bleat to its companion; Also the night creature shall rest there, And find for herself a place of rest.

And:

Isaiah 34:14 (LEB)-And desert creatures shall meet with hyenas, and a goat-demon shall call to his neighbor; surely there Lilith shall repose, and she shall find a resting place for herself.

One of the questions I am often asked deals with the subject of Lilith.

Who is Lilith, you ask?

To answer that, we will first look at the one passage of Scripture where Lilith is mentioned. After studying that, we will learn what Jewish occultism and witchcraft said about Lilith long after the Bible text.

Lilith In The Bible

The only passage where Lilith is directly mentioned in the Bible is in the Book of Isaiah:

Isaiah 34:14-The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the jackals, And the wild goat shall bleat to its companion; Also the night creature shall rest there, And find for herself a place of rest.

The phrase translated in the NKJV as “night creature” is the Hebrew word translated in English as “Lilith.”

In the context of Isaiah 34, God is talking about His future judgment on the world, when He will punish the nations because of their wickedness. Isaiah the Prophet is quoted by the Apostle John in describing these events that will take place at the Second Coming of Christ:

Isaiah 34:8-10-For it is the day of the LORD’s vengeance, The year of recompense for the cause of Zion. 9  Its streams shall be turned into pitch, And its dust into brimstone; Its land shall become burning pitch. 10  It shall not be quenched night or day; Its smoke shall ascend forever. From generation to generation it shall lie waste; No one shall pass through it forever and ever.

Revelation 14:10-11-he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11  And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

God’s judgments will fall not only on the sinful nations of man, but on the fallen angels and other wicked spirits that sin against God. Isaiah refers to these spirits here under the terminology of various animals. It was common in the Old Testament for the Prophets to refer to demons as different kinds of animals (and especially as beings that inhabited the wilderness). A good example of this can be seen earlier in Isaiah:

Isaiah 13:21-22-But wild beasts of the desert will lie there, And their houses will be full of owls; Ostriches will dwell there, And wild goats will caper there. 22  The hyenas will howl in their citadels, And jackals in their pleasant palaces. Her time is near to come, And her days will not be prolonged.”

Isaiah is here describing the downfall of Babylon the Great (not only Babylon of his day, but the Babylon of the Book of Revelation). Notice how John quotes from this passage and interprets it:

Revelation 18:2-And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird!

Do you notice the connections between the animals that Isaiah mentions, and how John interprets these as various kinds of demonic spirits?

Of course, the Jews did not believe that animals were actually demons. Instead, they saw characteristics within different kinds of animals that were reminiscent of demons. Heiser has well pointed out:

“Biblical writers were not expressing the notion that night birds and animals were actually demons any more than modern people who entertain superstitions about black cats think those animals are not members of the animal kingdom. An owl might be the symbol of Lilith, but owls were nevertheless birds. The vocabulary of nocturnal presence and behavior allowed the prophets to communicate the notion that some places are the jurisdiction of cosmic evil and therefore occupied by evil spirits.” (Michael S. Heiser, Demons: What the Bible Really Says About the Powers of Darkness, 676-680 (Kindle Edition); Bellingham, WA; Lexham Press)

So according to the Bible, Lilith was a demon (i.e., an evil spirit).

Amazingly, Lilith is also described in ancient Babylonian records. One former Satanist turned disciple of Christ has written:

“The very earliest known vampire-like creature is the Sumerian goddess or demoness, Lilitu6 or Lilith. 7 She ruled the night in ancient Sumer, right near Ur—the city from which Abram emerged. People described Lilitu as having the feet of a predatory bird and giant, eagle-like wings. She was frequently pictured astride two great lions. 8 This entity was known especially for killing babies and drinking their blood. She is felt to be the closest thing to a mother of all vampires. She is probably the proximate ancestor, culturally speaking, of the rabbinic concept of Lilith. The Jewish people probably heard about Lilith while in the Babylonian captivity. We must remember that the Bible is clear that the Israelites were not shy about incorporating other deities into their belief system. That is why the prophets continually called them back to YHWH and to faithfulness to the Torah. Some Bible commentators believe that Lilith or Lilitu is referenced obliquely as a “screech owl” in the prophet Isaiah: The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest (Isaiah 34: 14). Eerily, the Hebrew word there for “screech owl” is Liyliyth, 9 which is phonetically almost identical to Lilith. When one realizes that a satyr is a half-goat, half-man-shaped demonic monstrosity10 (kind of like the “great god Pan”), that is not too far a stretch to take! Additionally, the owl is sacred to another goddess, the Greek goddess of wisdom, Pallas Athena. There is also this reference: Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day (Psalm 91: 5). The phrase “terror by night” in Hebrew is Pachad11 Laylah. 12 We see the Hebrew word for night is Laylah, which is close in sound to Lilith. Brothers and sisters, this is not folklore; this is in the Holy Bible. Even the Isaiah passage undoubtedly would predate the Babylonian captivity, so the Hebrew people had some notion of a spectral demon goddess of the night even before being carried off into Babylon!(William SchnoebelenRomancing Death: A True Story of Vampirism, Death, the Occult and Deliverance, 878-933 (Kindle Edition); Shippensburg, PA; Destiny Image Publishers Inc.)

Another researcher points out the connections between Lilith in ancient Sumerian and Babylonian texts, and reminds us that originally “Lilith” referred to an entire group or “kind” of demonic spirit:

“Lilith: A demon with a long and colorful history who is currently depicted as the night-demon par excellence. Lilith can be traced back to the mythology of the Babylonians and Sumerians, where she appears most recognizably as the Ardat Lili, a maiden ghost that preys upon men in their sleep. Supposedly, this being died without first tasting the pleasures of sex, and henceforth she yearns for what she could not have. Her amorous embraces were considered fatal, however, and so this night-dwelling being was greatly feared. Although the Ardat Lili was often thought to haunt the night, Lilith’s connection to night was most likely established by the similarity of her name with that of the Hebrew word for “night,” iaiieh or layla. Lilith’s name did not originate in Hebrew, however, and so this connection is somewhat misleading. Her name is more properly derived from the Sumerian word lil, meaning “storm.” In this respect, she fits in neatly with traditional Sumerian demonology, where many demons were associated with destructive forces such as storms, earthquakes, and disease. In her earliest days, Lilith was not a singular being. Rather, the lilin or lilitu were a class of demons believed to haunt the deserts and wastelands. Perhaps because of this, Lilith is often associated with owls and other wild beasts. In Isaiah 34:14 (King James Version), the name Lilith is translated directly as “screech owl.” Her connection with birds may trace back to one of her first appearances in written language. One of the first known references to Lilith in literature appears in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Here, she appears as a demon who inhabits the Huluppa-Tree along with a dragon and something called the Zu-bird. When the Sumerian hero Gilgamesh slays the dragon that has curled up around the foot of the tree, Lilith is said to tear her house down and flee into the wilderness. This ancient passage may very well have established many of Lilith’s traditional associations, from birds to dragons to her abode in the wild spaces of the world.” (Michelle Belanger, The Dictionary of Demons: Names of the Damned, 189 (Kindle Edition); Woodbury, Minnesota; Llewellyn Publications)

Lilith is very real.

She is either a demonic spirit, or the word “Lilith” describes an entire class of demonic spirits.

Jewish Lore

Having carefully examined the Bible and its’ teaching regarding Lilith, let’s turn now to a study of legends that developed long after the Bible in Jewish occultism. Here we see that-among the Jewish people long after the writing of the Old Testament-a rabbinical teaching that developed was that Lilith was Adam’s first wife, and that she became the first vampire (stealing the blood of young babies and the semen of men).

One researcher has written:

“The history of “vampirism” goes back to the beginning: Genesis. Now, I know a lot of you are going to say, “There’s no mention of vampires in Genesis,” and you’d be right. But, for those in the occult, there is. Although purely myth, many in the occult believe there was a woman before Eve. The “original” woman created along with Adam was named Lilith. She had a problem being subservient to Adam, since she was created from the dust just like Adam had been, therefore making her an equal to “man.” She soon left Eden, and then Eve was created from Adam’s rib. (By the way, many radical feminists believe in and love the story of Lilith. Some even worship her because she was “truly equal” to Adam (man) and was punished for standing up to him, thus beginning the patriarchal wars.) Supposedly, God sent three angels to bring her back, but she refused, so the angels promised to kill one hundred of her children every day (she was busy) until she returned. Lilith, in turn, vowed to destroy human children. Lilith was often described as a winged female demon with sharp claws. She came in the night to kill babies, even the unborn. She was also sometimes described as beautiful and seductive, and would come to men at night as a succubus (a female demon that has sexual relations with men). Vampires are often described as seductive, and they are associated with having the ability to hypnotize people. It’s not hard to see the connection of Lilith to vampires. The death, the blood, the seduction. Not to mention apparently being immortal.” (Jeff Patty, “Twilight Of The Last Days,” in Thomas Horn, God’s Ghostbusters, 3870-3880 (Kindle Edition); Crane, MO; Defender)

The legend of Lilith as Adam’s first wife is one that dates back-not to the time of the writing of the Old Testament Scriptures-but to occult legends long after the time of Jesus. The book, The Alphabet Of Ben Sira, was written sometime between 700- 1000 A.D. and falsely attributed to Ben Sirach (a Jewish scribe who lived around 600 B.C.). This is the first known mention of the legend of Lilith being the first wife of Adam.

We learn:

“In time, what eventually emerges from these biblical and medicinal-magical traditions is three overlapping interpretations of Lilith: the etiological Lilith, a spirit that accounts for certain common but puzzling human physical processes—Death in childbirth, sudden infant death, and male nocturnal emissions; the midrashic Lilith, a creature born out of the medieval interpretation of problematic biblical passages; and the cosmic Lilith, an entity described in esoteric texts that personifies the existence of evil in the divine order…The most famous legend of Lilith is the one first appearing in the medieval satirical text Alex-Bet of Ben Sira. In that document, Lilith is identified as the first woman God created along with Adam.” (Geoffrey W. Dennis, The Encyclopedia of Jewish Myth, Magic and Mysticism: Second Edition, 254 (Kindle Edition); Woodbury, Minnesota; Llewellyn Publications)

Is there any evidence from the Bible that Lilith was the first wife of Adam?

No.

Is there any evidence that the Jewish people believed Lilith was the first wife of Adam before 700 A.D.?

No.

What’s more, the evidence from the Alphabet Of Ben Sirach shows that the entire account of Lilith being the wife of Adam was supposed to be a JOKE.

Modern Day Vampirism

It is a fact that there are many in the world who crave human blood.

Consider some of the following accounts.

(Warning: The following accounts are extremely graphic).

“I rejected the cult and was able to disconnect from my abusers. I was helped by some therapists who helped me to stabilize and regain my sanity after having been subjected to Satanic Ritual Abuse as a child. When I reached a point in my therapy where I was stable enough to be of help to others, I was trained in certain therapy processes. Basically I was trained to work with people who had become addicted to drinking adrenalized blood. This type of addiction is certainly as bad as any drug addiction. It’s rather an intense experience to try to do therapy with someone who has become addicted to drinking adrenalized blood. For one thing, it becomes pretty clear to you very quickly that your client is looking at you the way a wolf looks at a deer that it wants to kill and eat. It would have been easier if we could have just placed these addicts in some type of controlled environment. But if you understand how the Illuminati works, you would realize that such a thing is impossible. The children of Illuminati leaders might be experimented on with MK Ultra, but they would never be subjected to prison or mental institutions. So either we would cure the individuals of their blood-drinking addiction or they would go back to stalking innocent people. So, as I said, this therapy work tended to be kind of intense. I only did this type of work on an occasional basis for a few years. But I did survive it, and I think I have some insights into the nature of blood-drinking addiction. Not all blood drinkers are addicts. For some, blood drinking is an experimental fad; a way to assume what they think of as a hip, vampire attitude. For some occultists, blood drinking is done in moderation and infrequently; in their case it is part of a magickal working or an initiation ritual. In the case of these faddists and occultists, the acquiring of blood is not done in a violent way. It’s not done in a way that kills anyone or causes permanent damage. In fact such persons may use their own blood. This type of faddism or occultism doesn’t usually lead to addictive behavior. And you should know that some of the Satanists who dabble with this non-addictive blood drinking behavior are very wealthy and well educated. I believe that some of these Satanic occultists use blood which they have acquired from various medical sources. For example, I’ve recently heard of the increasingly common medical practice of taking cord blood from a newborn infant. I was informed of this by Jeanice Barcelo of BirthofaNewEarth.com. She’s done a great deal of research on this and related subjects. If you think about it, it doesn’t make any sense to take cord blood if the purpose is to protect the infant’s health. So why do some contemporary doctors do this? When I was younger, I knew of some Satanists who used human blood, body parts and bones as part of their occult practices. And they would get these things from medical sources. Some of these occultists believed that they could evoke the mystical life force through blood and body parts. There was also the idea that one might access the spirits of the dead through bones. And some of them did indulge in grave robbery. There was also an idea that if they ritualistically sacrificed innocent children, Satan would grant them power in the world. Oddly enough, some very well-educated and otherwise intelligent people seemed to believe in these ideas. As I have already explained, Bob’s sex films starring children were very popular among the aristocratic Satanists in Europe. So he was given an assignment to make yet another series of films, to document the practices of various Satanic groups around the world. With the blessing of the Committee in Europe, Bob travelled to many places and filmed many satanic practices. He was supposed to give copies of these films only to the Committee, but he secretly shared them with others–and again, I was one of those he shared them with. The first film he made in this series involved a child sacrifice which ended with the observers drinking the blood of the child.” (Keith Barker, Cannibalism, Blood Drinking & High-Adept Satanism, 64-66 (Kindle Edition))

Others have confirmed this tendency of many in the occult to drink blood:

“The public was aware that children were disappearing, but no one really knew what the disappearances meant. Parents drove kids to school and kept them indoors or at least within sight. It was a scary time in Omaha. However, even the most fantastic tales barely approach the truth, for who would believe it? I know what happened. I was forced to be part of these sick rituals. As my father’s son, I was expected to practice blood sacrifice. There is a misconception that satanists only kill babies, but it was my experience that a baby doesn’t offer enough blood. In blood sacrifice, it’s all about the blood, and I was taught by my father and his friends that the endorphins released into the blood when a person is under a great deal of fear and pain act as an aphrodisiac for torturers who drink the blood at the crescendo of suffering. Only elite members are allowed at sacrifices, and everyone attending was required to partake. Blood from the victim’s wounds drained down an altar-like table into a chalice, from which everyone drank. Because God forbids the spilling of blood, and satanists go against God’s teachings, they exert extreme effort to spill as much blood of children as they can. High ceremonies always meant murdering young boys. The belief that someday I would take my father’s place as high priest in a highly organized but secret cult afforded me no advantage with regard to my own pain and trauma. However, I must say, the ritualistic rapes of us children by cult members were nothing in comparison to what else was happening. At what I always believed to be a local funeral home on the outskirts of town, my father and his friends furthered their enjoyment by playing horrible games of hide and seek. We children were told that if we were found, we would be killed. All my life, I dreamed that I was often put in caskets inhabited by a corpse. Later in life, I realized these nightmares were real events and not something from my dream world. Sometimes children were buried alive in my dreams, which later was revealed as truth. And I distinctly remember, not even in a dream, that I was once forced to lie on the grave of a young boy to see if I could hear him scream. My sister later told me that they often dug the children out, but the psychological damage had already been done to me. Many of the atrocities were proclaimed as being done in my honor, so naturally I was often forced to participate in them. Cannibalism (eating of the heart among other body parts), bestiality (forcing kids to have sex with dogs, for example), murder (sacrifices made with knives usually), and rape (of both little boys and girls) were common practice with my family’s friends, and as a result, I suffered constant nightmares during my childhood and into my adult life of children coming from their graves to enact their justified revenge on me. It was because of these dreams that I would eventually seek coun-seling as an adult. For me, during childhood, every day meant I could be next.” (David Shurter, Rabbit Hole: A Satanic Ritual Abuse Survivor’s Story, 17-19 (Kindle Edition); Council Bluffs, IA; Consider It Creative)

Accounts such as this can easily be multiplied. As a Gospel preacher, I have myself worked with several individuals who have had similar experiences. Vampirism in this sense is very real, and may indeed be connected to the Lilith demon (s).

Conclusion

While the fanciful stories of Jewish occultism have no basis in reality, Lilith is a very real being (or class of being). Through the blood of His cross, Jesus has defeated the powers of darkness so that we can have victory over them-through Him!

Colossians 2:11-15- (ERV)-In Christ you had a different kind of circumcision, one that was not done by human hands. That is, you were made free from the power of your sinful self. That is the kind of circumcision Christ does. 12  When you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and you were raised up with him because of your faith in God’s power. God’s power was shown when he raised Christ from death. 13  You were spiritually dead because of your sins and because you were not free from the power of your sinful self. But God gave you new life together with Christ. He forgave all our sins. 14  Because we broke God’s laws, we owed a debt—a debt that listed all the rules we failed to follow. But God forgave us of that debt. He took it away and nailed it to the cross. 15  He defeated the rulers and powers of the spiritual world. With the cross he won the victory over them and led them away, as defeated and powerless prisoners for the whole world to see.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
