Micah 2:13 (ERV)-The “One Who Breaks Through Walls” will push through and walk to the front of his people. They will break through the gates and leave that city. They will leave with their king marching before them— with the LORD at the front of his people.
Throughout the Old Testament Scriptures, there are many names and descriptions provided for the Messiah. One of my favorite titles for our Savior is found here in Micah: the One Who Breaks Through Walls. In the passage before us, Micah is prophesying how the Messiah will lead His people through the obstacles presented by their enemies. Several things stand out from this passage.
First, God’s people will have enemies intent on destroying us in any way possible. This has always been an important message of God’s Word. We have an enemy committed to seeing us thwarted. While this enemy may work through human beings devoted to evil (cf. Job 1:6-17; John 13:2, 27), we must remember that our battle ultimately is not with flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:10-12).
Second, this passage teaches us about the identity of the Messiah. He is not only the Son of Man, Who would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:1-4). Instead, He is also identified here fully as being the LORD. Several passages of the Old Testament remind us of the Savior’s Divine as well as His human nature (cf. Isaiah 9:6; Psalm 45:6-7; 110:1). The New Testament echoes this teaching in numerous passages.
For example:
John 8:58-Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
Philippians 2:5-8-Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
Colossians 2:9-For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;
Third, the Messiah will lead us to be victorious against our enemies. He does not rescue us from our trials in life: instead, He leads us through them. God does not promise a secret rapture for His people to spare them from the heartaches and persecutions of their faith. Instead He brings us through those difficult times, walking with us and strengthening us each step of the way.
Thank You, Lord, for being the One Who breaks through walls. Amen.
