2 Chronicles 16:9-For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.…

The story of David and Goliath is one of the most well-known in Scripture. The fearless and young champion of God named David who accepted the challenge of the wicked giant known as Goliath and defeated him with a sling and stone serves throughout all time as a powerful reminder of courage and faith for the Lord’s people.

Perhaps that story of heroism is even more inspiring than we may realize at first glance.

When David was preparing for his confrontation with the Philistine, the Bible provides us with this interesting piece of information.

1 Samuel 17:40-Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.

David chose five smooth stones and took them into battle.

For years, I wondered why the Bible includes that detail.

Could it be just a strange detail?

Perhaps David was wanting to make sure he had plenty of stones to take on Goliath?

Maybe it was just to make sure that he had some extra stones ready to launch in case one wasn’t good enough?

Yet the answer may lay in the size of Goliath’s family!

Huh?

“David picks up five stones when he goes out to fight Goliath, which makes sense when we find out in 2 Samuel 21: 22 that Goliath had four brothers. David was ready for all five of them, and we all know the story of Goliath. He was the descendant of Anak, an offspring of these strange creatures.” (Chuck Missler, Angels Volume II: Messengers from the Metacosm, 35 (Kindle Edition): Coeur d’Alene, ID: Koinonia House Inc.)

Jewish tradition confirms this fact of Goliath’s history.

David was prepared to take on not just one giant, but an entire family of them.

The lesson for us today is in realizing this: when God prepares us to deal wth one challenge, He will ensure that we have the necessary tools to completely handle that particular trial. There is no struggle, no enemy, that awaits you which God will not equip you fully to handle.

Philippians 4:19-And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Let us give thanks to God for the lesson of the five stones.

Father, we thank You for providing everything we need in and through Christ Jesus. Please assure our hearts with the knowledge that, in You, we are sufficient for every challenge. Amen.
