Proverbs 14:34-Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.
One of the debates that has raged in our country has been over whether or not America is a “Christian nation.”
When we study the writings of the founding of the United States, we see many evidences that it was indeed founded on the principles of God’s Word. For example, on four separate occasions, the Declaration of Independence mentions God:
The Laws of Nature of Nature’s God…
All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights…
Appealing to the Supreme Judge of the Word for the Rectitude of our Intentions…
with a firm Reliance on the Protection of Divine Providence…
The phrases “the Laws of Nature,” and “Nature’s God” refer to Sir William Blackstone’s four volume set, Commentaries On The Laws Of England, which Thomas Jefferson had a copy of. Blackstone points out that natural law comes from God (in nature), and that revealed law comes from God (in the Scriptures). There is thus a strong case to be made from the Declaration of Independence that many of the founders of our nation were Christians. Indeed, Dr. M.E. Bradford of the University of Dallas researched in great detail the religious background of the founding fathers. He noted especially their commitment to Christianity, concluding that of the fifty-six men who signed the document, at least fifty, perhaps fifty-two, were Trinitarian Christians. This is, no doubt, one of the reasons why so many have acknowledged this Christian foundation of the United States.
“In 1811, New York Supreme Court Chief Justice James Kent in People v. Ruggles held: “‘…whatever strikes at the root of the Bible tends manifestly to the dissolution of civil government….’ We are a Christian people, and the morality of the country is deeply engrafted upon the Bible…. The Bible in its enlarged sense, as a religion revealed and taught in the Bible, is part and parcel of the law of the land…” (People v. Ruggles, 1811) The South Carolina Supreme Court upheld the Christian foundation of this nation when it ruled in 1844 ” Charleston v. Benjamin, “The Bible is part of the common law of the land, with liberty of conscience to all. It has always been so recognized…. Judge Nathaniel Freeman in 1802 charged Massachusetts Grand Juries as follows: “The laws of the Christian system, as embraced by the Bible, must be respected as of high authority in all our courts…. [Our government] originating in the voluntary compact of a people who in that very instrument profess the Christian religion, it may be considered, not as republic Rome was a Pagan, but a Christian republic.” (City of Charleston v Benjamin, 1846)..”. (Chief Joseph Riverwind, Assisted by Laralyn RiverWind That’s What The Old Ones Say: Pre-Colonial Revelations Of God, 146-147 (Kindle Edition); Marble, NC; Word Branch Publishing)
But that isn’t the end of the story.
The further we dig, we realize that there is another powerful group of individuals who were involved in America’s founding. They dreamed and planned that America would become a source of paganism, modeled after fabled Atlantis. Manly P. Hall, noted scholar of the occult secret society known as the Freemasons, described it this way:
“Thousands of years ago, in Egypt, these mystical orders were aware of the existence of the western hemisphere and the great continent which we call America. The bold resolution was made that this western continent should become the site of the philosophic empire…And so it is from the remote past, from the deep shadows of the medieval world as well as from the early struggles of more modern times, that the power of American democracy has come. But we are only on the threshold of the democratic state.…“Plato, it must be remembered, was a monarchist by philosophic conviction, but his ideal king was the wise man perfect in the virtues and the natural ruler of those less informed than himself. This king was the father of his people, impersonal and unselfish, dedicated to the public good, a servant of both the gods and his fellow men. This king was descended of a divine race; that is, he belonged to the Order of the Illumined; for those who come to a state of wisdom then belong to the family of the heroes–perfected human beings….In America shall be erected a shrine to Universal Truth, as here arises the global democratic Commonwealth–the true wealth of all mankind, which is designed in the foundation that men shall abide together in peace and shall devote their energies to the common cause of discovery. … The power of man lies in his dreams, his visions, and his ideals. This has been the common vision of man’s necessity in the secret empire of the Brotherhood of the Quest, consecrated to fulfilling the destiny for which we in America were brought into being.” (Manly P. Hall, The Secret Destiny of America, 122, 133, 395-396, 1573 (Kindle Edition): Los Angeles, CA: The Philosophical Research Society)
Two different groups, each with their own contrasting beliefs and ideals, were behind the creation of the American empire. Both of those groups are still operating today, each promoting their own separate agendas. The ones who promote the “Christian nation” viewpoint of our nation have become in modern times nearly inseparable with the ideals of what has been termed “Christian Nationalism” (which is not biblical).
But there is another kingdom which exists in America, as it exists in every nation of the world: the body of Christ! This kingdom is spiritual in nature (Luke 17:20-21), and is not a political or military force. In the long run, the most important question is not whether America is a “Christian nation” (so-called): it is whether or not you and I are members of Christ’s true nation, the church of Christ.
Acts 2:37-41-Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.
Father, thank You that we can be part of Your nation, the church of Christ. Guide us and help us as we live as pilgrims in this world. Amen.
