Jeremiah 1:5-Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

Did you know that the Bible hints at the possibility that babies in the womb pray to God?

The psalmist wrote:

Psalm 71:6-By You I have been upheld from birth; You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb. My praise shall be continually of You.

Now look at how this is rendered in another translation:

Psalm 71:6 (ERV)-I depended on you even before I was born. I relied on you even in my mother’s womb. I have always prayed to you.

The psalmist connects the idea of “I have always prayed to You” with the time that he spent in his mother’s womb. This is especially interesting when we consider that the Lord said that He “knew” Jeremiah from the time that he was in the womb. In fact, God knew him before He formed him in the womb!

Look at that word “knew.”

“(4) That y da includes a sense of relationship is evident, for the verb expresses sexual intimacy within the marriage covenant: “Adam lay with [lit., knew] his wife Eve, and she became pregnant” (Gen. 4: 1; cf. also 1 Sam. 1: 19). In a more general sense of relationship, y da can describe friendship (Job 19: 13) or even an acquaintance (Gen. 29: 5). This use of y da to denote relationship may also describe the proper relationship of partners within a covenant. Thus, when y da is found within covenant contexts of the OT, it describes covenant relationship rather than mere cognitive activity.” (William Mounce, Mounce’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, 893 (Kindle Edition): Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan)

This helps us see again that babies are alive and identifiable as persons from the moment of conception. Christians need to do whatever we can to advocate for the wellbeing of babies.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. Amen.
