Is Our Suffering A Punishment For Our Sin?
Job 4:7-8 (CEV)-Can you think of any innocent person who was ever destroyed? Do you know of any place where good people are punished? 8 Yes, I have seen people whose lives were cut short, but they were evil troublemakers.
Job 8:4 (CEV)-If your children sinned against God, he punished them. They paid for their sins.
In 2022, a terrible flood devastated eastern Kentucky. Historians said that such a flood happens only once every 150 years! Our church was blessed to be able to minister (along with many others) to survivors during that horrific ordeal. A friend messaged me one day and said that a famous preacher had done a podcast saying that the flood had happened as a punishment from God because people in Perry county were so sinful and wicked. I can only assume that the man has not studied the Bible very thoroughly. After all, Job’s friends said that God was punishing Job and his sons for their sins. How did God respond?
Job 42:7 (ERV)-After the LORD finished talking to Job, he spoke to Eliphaz from Teman. He said, “I am angry with you and your two friends, because you did not tell the truth about me, as my servant Job did.
Sometimes we suffer in this life as the result of bad decisions we make (Proverbs 13:15), the bad decisions of others (Genesis 3:17-19), as a result of Satan attacking us (Job 1-2), or sometimes because we live in a fallen world where bad things sometimes happen (Luke 13:1-5). Sometimes we don’t know the reason for our suffering at all (Psalm 131). Whatever the reason for our hardships, we can have absolute confidence that God will always allow it to bring about good (Isaiah 26:9; Psalm 119:67, 71, 75; John 5:14; 9:1-5; 2 Corinthians 12:1-10; James 5:11). When someone is suffering, let’s stand by them and do what we can to help instead of pointing fingers (Galatians 6:10).
Father, we pray today for all who are suffering. We don’t always understand why things happen in this world, but we trust You and what You allow. We know that You are good, and that You do good. Help us to be the body of Christ and to do what we can to help others as we are able. We thank You. Amen.
