Meditations On The Living Water Of Ezekiel And Zechariah (Part Two)

It is written:

“And in that day it shall be—That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, Half of them toward the eastern sea And half of them toward the western sea; In both summer and winter it shall occur.” (Zechariah 14:8)

Whatever the “living water” is, it would manifest “in that day.” What does this mean?

Throughout the Old Testament, the word “day” can have reference to a dispensation of time (Genesis 2:3 with Hebrews 4:4-10; Exodus 13:10; Leviticus 7:36, 38; Numbers 9:15; Obadiah 11; Ezekiel 20:5-6; 36:33). With this in mind, it is interesting to notice how the phrase “in that day” is used throughout Zechariah:

• “In that day” refers to a time when many of the nations of the world will begin to serve the Lord (Zechariah 2:11);

• “In that day” denotes a new time of peace among Gods people (Zechariah 3:10);

• “In that day” refers to a time when God will save His people (Zechariah 9:16);

• “In that day” refers to a time when the nations attack Jerusalem and are punished for their actions (Zechariah 12:3, 4,, 8).

• “In that day” refers to a time when Jerusalem will be inhabited again by Jews (Zechariah 12:6).

• “In that day” refers to a time when God will defend Jerusalem against the nations who come against it (Zechariah 12:9)

• “In that day” refers to a time when the people of Israel will mourn (in repentance) towards their treatment of God (specifically, the Messiah-Zechariah 12:10-14-compare with John 19:34-37; Revelation 1:7);

• “In that day” refers to a time when forgiveness is extended to the repentant Jews (Zechariah 13:1);

• “In that day” refers to a time when the power of sin, idols, and demonic power is broken (although not completely or ultimately destroyed-Zechariah 13:2, 4);

• “In that day” refers to a time when the LORD will stand on the Mount of Olives to provide a way of escape for His people (Zechariah 14:4);

• “In that day” refers to a time when the Lord will come “with His saints” and deliver His people from horrible war that they are involved in (Zechariah 14:5)

• “In that day” refers to a time when the lights of the world will diminish (Zechariah 14:6);

• “In that day” refers to a time which only the LORD knows (Zechariah 14:7);

• “In that day” refers to a time all the peoples of the world will submit to the Lord and serve Him (Zechariah 14:9);

• “In that day” refers to a time when the enemies of God are punished as His faithful are rewarded (Zechariah 14:13-21)

The “living waters” would manifest “in that day” (Zechariah 14:8).

In our next study, we will consider in detail this information and see what it teaches us about the living water.
