The subject of communicating with the dead has caught the fancy of many Americans. Experiments with table-knocking, crystal ball reading, ouija boards, and electric voice phenomenon (EVP) have become standard topics of conversation in many homes. Many become ensnared with these matters, opening themselves up to spiritual dangers that they are often unprepared to deal with (Mark 9:14-29). The Word of God tells us several times of the serious nature of the sin of necromancy (i.e., attempting to communicate with the dead):
Deuteronomy 18:10-11-10 There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11 or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.
1 Chronicles 10:13-So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance.
Many believe that occultism is a simple farce, nothing more than raw emotions deceiving a person in the stillness of the night. Yet the Bible is clear that occultism is very real, and very dangerous. Further, the facts of science confirm this conclusion. Noted research Dave Hunt has written:
“A Ouija board demonstrates the ease with which anyone can be caught up in the world of the occult. Scientific tests with a Ouija board have proved beyond dispute that an intelligence independent of the persons using the board is guiding the planchette. Sir William Barrett conducted experiments in which the operators were blindfolded and the alphabet around the board was scrambled without their knowledge. In addition, an opaque screen was held between the sitters and the Ouija to make doubly sure that those using the board could not see the letters. Under these rigorously controlled conditions the planchette moved faster than ever. In his report to the American Society for Psychical Research, Barrett said: For we have here, in addition to the blindfolding of the sitters, the amazing swiftness, precision and accuracy of the movements of the indicator spelling out long and intelligent messages … without halting or error … messages often contrary to and beyond the knowledge of the sitters. … Reviewing the results as a whole, I am convinced of their supernormal character, and that we have here an exhibition of some intelligent discarnate agency … guiding [the sitters’] muscular movements.” (Dave Hunt, Occult Explosion: The Subtle Seduction Of The World And Church, 3248-3263 (Kindle Edition); Bend, Oregon; The Berean Call)
Occultism is very real, and very dangerous. The Bible reminds us that the church is constantly at war with principalities and powers, the rulers of the darkness of this age, and with spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12). If you are involved in the sin of necromancy, I encourage you to repent immediately. The death of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary disarmed the powers of darkness, granting us the opportunity to be saved (Colossians 2:15). Jesus was buried, and three days later He arose (1 Corinthians 15:1-8). He has the power to save you from Hell (Revelation 12:7-12). Why not today repent of your sins and be baptized into Christ (Acts 2:38; 22:16)? If you are an erring child of God, why not today return to your Lord through repentance and prayer (Revelation 3:20)?
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
