Psalm 119:24-Your testimonies also are my delight And my counselors.

My friend Perry Erb and I were driving from the West Virginia School of Preaching (located in Moundsville, W.V.) to the Harmar Hill church of Christ located in Marietta, Ohio. We were on our way to a congregational singing, which churches in that area often took turns hosting once a month back then.

It was a Friday night.

The singing started at 6:30, and we had left Moundsivlle at about 4:00.

Keeping in mind that it is about a forty five minute drive to the church, we began to realize we were lost at about 8.

We missed the signing that night, but learned a valuable lesson: the importance of having a good map!

Have you ever stopped to consider the blessing of the Bible as the road map for life? Paul tells us the importance of the Bible:

2 Timothy 3:16-17-All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17  that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

In verse 16, the Apostle mentions four things especially that are especially profitable (advantageous: helpful: beneficial) about Scripture: “doctrine…reproof…correction…instruction in righteousness.”

It is interesting to notice what those words mean:

Spicq (2: 788–89) explains the four phrases as (a) Scripture is the only true source for pastoral and doctrinal teaching, (b) Scripture is the best ammunition for rebuking the false teachers, (c) Scripture will not only stop the deviations of the false teachers but straighten out and improve the condition, and (d) Scripture is necessary for the training of truly virtuous Christians.” (William D. Mounce, Pastoral Epistles, Volume 46 (Word Biblical Commentary), 569-570 (Kindle Edition); Grand Rapids, Michigan; Zondervan)

Scripture provides us with knowledge about: right teaching (doctrine), bad teaching (reproof), bad living (correction), and right living (instruction in righteousness).

What a blessing is the roadmap of God to humankind, the Holy Bible!

Lord, we thank You for Your Word. Amen.
