1 Kings 4:33-34-Also he spoke of trees, from the cedar tree of Lebanon even to the hyssop that springs out of the wall; he spoke also of animals, of birds, of creeping things, and of fish. 34  And men of all nations, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom, came to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

Some months back, I saw something on Facebook which I suspected at first was “fake news.” It was an article from a research journal that suggested that rats and mice actually sing to their mates. I thought, “That is ridiculous.” But I did some study…and discovered it is true!

The following quotation discusses something called Ultra Sonic Vocalizations (USV) in animals.

Various species also use USVs widely during mating, produced primarily by males to entice females. By the end of the 1970s, our understanding of how rodents use sound to communicate had completely changed. After this initial spate of work, the study of rodent USVs ticked along until the past decade or so, when a new research drive on USVs shed light on just how sophisticated rodent vocal communication is. It turns out that the calls aren’t simple sounds of one pitch that are ‘turned on or off’ but that they are intricately structured. Studies of the USVs of male mice have revealed that the vocalizations consist of elaborate patterns of repeating syllables and phrases (sequences of syllables in close succession), amazingly similar to the patterns in birdsong (Figure 6). 7 The rats seem to be singing to females as part of their mating behaviour. What’s more, even in highly genetically similar males, the calls are different, suggesting that the rats’ songs convey some sort of information, perhaps about the quality of the male. This discovery has drawn much interest into rodent USVs, including those researchers studying song and vocal communication beyond humans and birds. The incredible nature of animals is one of the great evidences of God’s existence and wisdom.

Can you think of of any astonishing and intriguing behaviors and characteristics of animals that lead you to stand in awe of God?

Father, we praise You and thank You for Your creation. Thank You for making us, and for allowing us to be part of Your world. Amen.
