Mark 13:32-But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
It was without a doubt one of the strangest Bible studies that I have ever been blessed to participate in.
I met with some friends at a local restaurant for Bible study, and we noticed a gentleman in a wheelchair listening in (we will call him Jay). We invited him to join us, and here is a gist of how the conversation went.
Jay: You know that you cannot really trust the New Testament.
Mark: Really? Why is that?
Jay: All of the Apostles of Christ had diseases and were not reliable witnesses.
Mark: How do you know that any of the Apostles had diseases (much less all of them)? Why did none of their contemporaries make mention of these diseases, or their enemies, for that matter? And granting for the sake of argument that they all did have them, why would their having these alleged diseases keep them from being credible eyewitnesses of Jesus’ teaching and miracles?
Jay: Everyone knows that they did not write the truth.
Mark: No, everyone doesn’t. There is plenty of evidence showing that they were credible eyewitnesses, and what’s more, archaeology confirms their testimony.
Jay: You are wrong! The world ended twenty years ago, and you don’t even know it.
Mark: Ummm….
Jay: Did you not hear me? The world ended at a Beyoncé concert in the late nineties!
Mark: I think I would remember something like the world ending, sir. I can tell you assuredly: it has not yet ended.
(End Relevant Conversation)
Our discussion continued on for quite a while. Jay declared that the end was recorded in a flash of light in the Beyoncé concert, which we politely looked up on YouTube. There certainly was a flash of light in it, and then the video continued. Jay insisted that the world ended during that flash of light. (Why the world’s ending coincided with that ccocnert, I have no idea, nor did Jay enlighten us).
We prayed with him, and invited him to church with us. He respectfully declined our offer to come to worship with us at Keavy, but hopefully one day he will change his mind.
My friends, the end of the world is something about which there will be no question. Everyone will be aware of it.
Acts 1:9-11-Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”
1 Corinthians 15:50-51-Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—. 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18-But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.
2 Thessalonians 1:7-10-and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.
2 Peter 3:10-13-But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
Revelation 1:7-Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.
No one will miss the Second Coming.
Are you ready for that Day?
If not, repent and be baptized and have your sins forgiven (Acts 2:38).
If you are a member of the church who has backslide, come back to the Lord in repentant and prayer (1 John 1:9).
Lord, help us to be ready for Your Return. Amen.
