Job 11:7-9-Can you search out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limits of the Almighty? 8 They are higher than heaven—what can you do? Deeper than Sheol—what can you know? 9 Their measure is longer than the earth And broader than the sea.
As I write these words, the crew of the spaceship Artemis II is speeding on their way to the moon. For the first time in some fifty years, mankind has marshaled the technology and ability to travel again to Earth’s closest body. The scientific and technical knowledge needed for such a feat are well beyond my understanding, and they remind us again of the incredible intricacy and design of the cosmos. After all, the only reason that the science can be formulated to prepare such a journey is because of the incredible and dependable mathematical laws etched by God into the very fabric of the universe itself.
John Kinson is a scientist who has spent his late studying the complexities of the creation. Originally an atheist, his investigations into the marvels of the universe led him to conclude that there is, indeed, a God. Writing of the mathematical laws of the universe, he documents:
“On May 11, 1959, the Nobel Laureate Eugene Wigner delivered a lecture on the Mathematical Sciences at New York University. He titled his lecture “The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences”. In that lecture, and in a later essay, Wigner stated: “[ T] he enormous usefulness of mathematics in the natural sciences is something bordering on the mysterious and … there is no rational explanation for this.” [2]–E. Wigner, Physicist, Nobel Laureate And, “[ T] he mathematical formulation of the physicist’s often crude experience leads in an uncanny number of cases to an amazingly accurate description of a large class of phenomena.” [2]–E. It is only because of the existence of these mathematical laws of the universe that science and technology can function. Furthermore, you simply cannot have laws without lawgivers, and so the existence of these laws points to the undeniable existence, intelligence, and goodness of the eternal Lawgiver.
As Kinson notes later in his book:
“In the words of astrophysicist Ross, “The cosmic fine-tuning in the cosmic density terms establishes that the cause or God of creation, at a minimum, is ten trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion times more intelligent, more knowledgeable, more creative, and more powerful than human beings.” [13]…So, as we have seen, science has shown that many, many physical conditions and values in the universe have been fine-tuned to incredible degrees of precision to enable life (and intelligent life in particular) to exist in the universe. An obvious question then, is “what tuned these knobs?” Whatever tuned these knobs was a transcendent non-physical being, as we saw from the clue of the Big Bang. And whatever tuned the knobs was able to carefully select correct values for intelligent life to exist in the universe. Such careful selection points to purpose and intelligence. So, the clue of “the fine-tuning of the universe” points us to the existence of an intelligent, purposeful non-physical being who tuned these knobs. The Christian God is such a being. — Furthermore, the amount of care lavished upon creating the parameters (“knobs”) and then fine tuning them with painstaking care and precision (to values that are conducive to life, and to intelligent life in particular) points to a being who cares about intelligent life, rather than a being who is indifferent to intelligent life. In other words, this clue points to a Theist God (who cares about his Creation) rather than a Deist God (who does not care about his Creation). Given this degree of care, it is not unreasonable to think that this being might choose to reveal “Himself” to humans. The central thesis of Christianity is that the Christian God is indeed such a Being who cares about the intelligent life He created, and who has revealed Himself to us in the person of Jesus Christ.” (John M.
