I remember when I was learning about Earth Sciences and Biology in high school. One of my teachers was very annoyed because she was required to teach us the theory of evolution as advocated by Charles Darwin, but she was forbidden (by law) to teach us the scientific evidences for creationism. However, she always managed to slip in little “tidbits” of information for us to consider critically. One of them dealt with the origin of life. According to the theory of evolution, there had to be a time when nonliving materials somehow gave rise to life. (This was known back in the day as “spontaneous generation,” but today it is typically called “abiogenesis.”).
But this is impossible!
One Nobel Prize winning scientist named George Wald wrote:
“There are only two possibilities as to how life arose. One is spontaneous generation arising to evolution; the other is a supernatural creative act of God. There is no third possibility. Spontaneous generation, that life arose from non-living matter, was scientifically disproved 120 years ago by Louis Pasteur and others. “That leaves us with the only possible conclusion that life arose as a supernatural creative act of God. I will not accept that philosophically because I do not want to believe in God. Therefore, I choose to believe in that which I know is scientifically impossible; spontaneous generation arising to evolution.” (George Wald, “The Origin of Life. Well, the problem just keeps getting worse for those who stubbornly hold to Darwin’s theory despite the continually mounting evidence showing there is a God. Indeed, these evidences are one reason why many scientists in our time are continuing to turn from the foolishness of atheism to belief in God. One recent book explores this in depth.
“To get some idea about what nature supposedly accomplished all by itself, let’s calculate the probability of a protein emerging by pure chance…Protein chains consist of between 150 and several million amino acids. What is the minimum probability that a chain composed of 1,000 of the 22 types of amino acids could come together in the right order?…Even when we make the task this much simpler, the probability comes out to be one chance in 221000, in other words about one chance in 101500. The number is so large it is impossible to comprehend. To put it in perspective, the likelihood is less than winning the lottery (by drawing the right six numbers between 1 and 49 in order—at one chance in ten billion) every week in a row for 150 weeks304—more than two years! 305 It is radically impossible for this to happen by chance. Practically speaking, it would take longer than the lifespan of the Universe for a single protein to form by accident out of available amino acids. And since the simplest life form has at least two hundred proteins, we are dealing with improbabilities of staggering proportions, especially since a living cell needs not only two hundred proteins but also DNA, RNA, genes, enzymes, and a good deal of other factors like metabolism. Professor Frank Salisbury, former Director of Plant Science at Utah State University and member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), has estimated the probability of the formation of a molecule of DNA through natural chemical reactions on 1020 “hospitable” planets over the course of four billion years at one chance in 10415.306 Simply put, in practical reality there is no chance at all…• Finally, biophysicist Harold Morowitz of Yale University, an expert in the applications of computer science and thermodynamics in biology, calculated the probability that the simplest living cell arose as a result of chance alone at one chance in 10340,000, which for all practical purposes is evidently equal to zero. 318 The numbers don’t lie, and they all point one way: pure chance is not a reasonable hypothesis for explaining the transition from inert matter to the first living being Consequently, the various laws and physico-chemical constraints that govern the appearance of life point necessarily to the existence of an intelligent designer. The preceding chapters on cosmology have already shown that the fine-tuning of the Universe had a one in 10120 chance of turning out as it did. As if this number weren’t crazy enough already! But biology has yielded even more outlandishly long odds. The probability that life emerged by chance is mind-blowingly small: 10340,000, but nothing in the observable Universe can exceed 10120! The fine-tuning of the laws of the Universe is a genuine proof of the existence of a designer…The fact that we can quantify the incredible leap from the inert to the living is strong evidence for the existence of a creator God”. The odds of life arising about from non-living materials as Darwin’s theory advocates were illustrated by a scientist named Fred Hoyle:
“Anonymous, Hoyle on Evolution,” Nature, vol. 294 (November 12, 1981), p. 105 “The essence of his argument last week was that the information content of the higher forms of life is represented by the number 10 —representing the specificity with which some 2000 genes, each of which might be chosen from 10 nucleotide sequences of the appropriate length, might be defined. Evolutionary processes would, Hoyle said, require several Hubble times to yield such a result. The chance that higher life forms might have emerged in this way is comparable with the chance that ‘a tornado sweeping through a junk-yard might assemble a Boeing 747 from the materials therein.’” (Henry M. Is it any wonder so many scientists are turning to faith in God? Everything in nature points to Him.
At the same time, this all reminds us of our need to do our best to make sure that children are taught these facts.
